About the Project

Swell, hosted by Ripple, is an annual event that brings together the world’s leading experts on blockchain, policy, payments and technology. The main focus of the second annual Swell by Ripple conference was to provide an opportunity for Ripple’s customers to meet, share and establish new corridors on RippleNet.

Concept

Ripple’s Events Marketing team came up with Be Connected as the tagline to support the event’s main initiative of facilitating new connections. My role was to visually come up with a concept and narrative that represents connections.

Reflecting on the idea of connections, I thought about how constellations are a collection of stars that our ancestors grouped together to establish new meaning and connections. Every customer on RippleNet is a point of connection on the network. Much like stars in the universe are like nodes in a network, constellations was the perfect visual metaphor for bringing Ripple’s customers together. After pitching this idea, constellations was chosen as the visual theme and narrative for the event.


Visual Design

After the concepting phase, I put together a mood board with images that represents constellations and connections. For colors, I was inspired by the blues and greens of the aurora borealis you see in the Earth's sky. For the design, I was inspired by the organic shape of the milky way and dots that represent stars.

I created the logo for Swell by Ripple along with the brand and identity system in 2017. Building off of that foundation, the constellations concept and mood board, I designed the visual identity for 2018.

Digital Design

After the initial visual identity was set, we applied the language to all digital marketing materials like banner ads and blog posts to promote the event.

Environmental Design

We worked with the production team at Astound to bring our vision to life. Our design team at Ripple outlined the experience, designed and mocked assets in 2D and sent it over to Astound to render it in 3D. This process works well for us as we can show exactly what we want our vendor to produce. The Ripple design team managed all print, digital and environmental graphics.

The stage design was inspired by Jason Sherwood’s Constellations II set design. I wanted the stage to look like a swell was encapsulating the speakers.
